Pardon my ignorance, but what is the value in a tripod head that only tilts in one direction?

Jeff, For the best all around head that tilts in one direction, I would go with the J200. It will work well with almost any medium or small format camera as well as a great many large format cameras.

As a view camera user I typically start with a level plane when setting up the tripod so the single tilt is all that I would need.

Cedric, I too am using a view camera, but I gauge levelness by using the single axis bubble level that's built-in to the top of my Technika and adjust the movements provided in the tripod head. In your workflow, how do you go about adjusting the tripod to level, does it have a built-in level, or do you bring and place a separate leveling tool on top of the tripod when adjusting its legs for levelness?

All of Ries' heads have a bubble level mounted on the base plate. Typically this is used to level the tripod and base of the head.
